East Alabama Male College, sponsored by the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, was chartered in May 1856. Classes opened in 1859 in Auburn, Alabama, but the college closed during the Civil War. Lemuel Cornick Shepherd, Jr. (b. Feb. 10, 1896, Norfolk, Va.-d. Aug. 6, 1990), received his commission from the Virginia Military Institute in 1917. He reached the rank of brigadier general in July 1943, then major general in September 1944.
